Happy Fourth of July - Patriotic places to visit

Happy Fourth of July to our American followers. Visiting all fifty states is a patriotic gesture in itself. All Fifty Club members value and want to know more about each state of our union. Some of our travel stops, generate an overwhelming patriotic feeling - that feeling that we are proud to be Americans and in awe of American history and all that America has to offer. Here's just a few that most Travel Goal Getters have been to.

The bank is closed. The post office is closed. Oh, yeah - it's President's Day. It is one of the holidays that some people are fortunate to get off work but few people actually celebrate the holiday for what it is. Another way we can honor our past presidents is by visiting some presidential sites to learn more about them and what they did for our country. Travel Goal Getter has compiled a list of over 130 Presidential Sites to visit. These including the 13 Presidential libraries maintained by the National Archives, privately-operated sites and many sites operated by National Park Services or State Parks.

Some of the recent presidential sites my family visited were Dwight Eisenhower's home in Abilene, Kansas and Bill Clinton's former home in Hope, Arkansas. We couldn't help but feel proud to be an American - to live in a country where our Presidents can come from anywhere and any background in our country. Although people saw their potential early on, they were kids - building forts in the backyard or playing in a school marching band - just like you and me.

After a whirlwind trip to Virginia and Washington D.C. I realized that we had been to quite a few presidential sites and started keeping track. One way to do this is to utilize the Travel Goal Getter iPad App. Just add the former U.S. presidents or Presidential Libraries as travel experiences. When you visit a site check it off. However you track it - if you have visited sites for more than 30 presidents or all 13 libraries, let us know and we will add you as a Travel Goal Getter Record Holder.

In our final post about the World Travels of U.S. Presidents, we reveal the travel accomplishments of Presidents George H.W. Bush, William J. Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. We will also announce the winner of the most traveled U.S. President and the most traveled political party. The answers may surprise you!

Thanks to the U.S. Department of State Office of the Historian, we have put together maps showing the World Travels of U.S. Presidents. Over the next week or two follow along and you'll see who wins the prize as the most traveled U.S. President. All of the maps will be put on our Pinterest Page for easy access and viewing. President George H.W. Bush traveled to 35 countries as president including; Canada (4), Japan (2), China, Korea (2), Italy (2), Vatican City (2), Belgium (2), Germany (5), UK (3), Poland (2), Hungary, France (6), Netherlands (2), Costa Rica, Malta, Columbia, Finland (2), Czechoslovakia, Saudi Arabia (2), Egypt, Switzerland, Mexico, Brazil (2), Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Greece, Turkey, Russia (2), Spain, Australia, Singapore, Panama, and Somalia.

One of our Presidential Uber Travelers, President William J. Clinton made it to a whopping 73 countries! You are reading it correctly: President George W. Bush also visited 73 countries during his terms! Our current President, Barack Obama has traveled to 32 countries during his term including; Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, El Salvador, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, United Kingdom, Vatican City. If President Obama is elected for a second term, his is still well off the pace of Presidents Bush and Clinton.

Well that does it! The most traveled U.S. President is two Presidents - Clinton and George W. Bush.

Now which political party travels the most? Let me first say that of the last 19 U.S. Presidents that have traveled overseas, the last 4, Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Obama have accounted for over 50% of the total presidential travel since Theodore Roosevelt made the first presidential visit abroad in 1906. Back to our final question - which political party is the most traveled? Technically, the republican party has visited more at 225 countries visited but they have had one more President in office.

When you average countries visited, democrat presidents have visited 22.22 countries per president while republican presidents have the slight edge at 22.50 countries visited per president. Nearly a tie!

In this second to last post on the World Travels of U.S. Presidents, we track the travels of Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan. Can you guess which President only traveled to 1 country (besides the U.S.) in North and South America?

President Richard M. Nixon traveled to 30 countries including; Belgium (2 times), United Kingdom (4 times), Germany, Italy (2 times), France (3 times), Vatican City (2 times), Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Pakistan, Romania, Mexico (2 times), Serbia (was Yugoslavia), Spain, Ireland, Portugal (2 times), China, Canada, Austria, Russia (2 times, was U.S.S.R), Iran, Poland, Iceland, Austria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Isreal, and Jordan.

If you guessed that President Gerald R. Ford only made it to 1 North and South American Country outside of the U.S. you are correct! In addition to Mexico, President Ford traveled to 18 countries including; Japan, Korea, Russia (was U.S.S.R), France (2 times), Belgium, Spain, Austria, Italy, Vatican City, Germany, Poland, Finland, Romania, Serbia (was Yugoslavia), China, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

President Jimmy Carter topped President Ford's travels and made it to 25 countries including; United Kingdom, Switzerland, Poland, Iran, India, Saudi Arabia, Egypt (3 times), France (2 times), Belgium, Venezuela, Brazil, Nigeria, Liberia, Panama, Germany, Mexico, Israel, Austria, Japan (2 times), Korea, Italy, Vatican City, Serbia (was Yugoslavia), Spain, and Portugal.

Wrapping up this group is President Ronald Reagan who traveled to 26 countries. He had stops in Mexico (6 times), Canada (5 times), Jamaica, Barbados, France (3 times), Italy (2 times), Vatican City (2 times), United Kingdom (3 times), Germany (3 times), Brazil, Columbia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Japan (2 times), Korea, China, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium (2 times), Grenada, Indonesia, Iceland, Finland, and Russia (was U.S.S.R.).

We've got some heavy traveled Presidents coming up with George H. W. Bush, William J. Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. You'll see some very green maps in a few days to finish up this series. We'll also tally up which party, Democrats or Republicans are the most traveled. Stay tuned!

The GOP Convention has come and gone and November will be here before we know it. All this political talk made me wonder: Who is the most traveled U.S. President? Who is the least traveled? What political party travels the most?
Thanks to the U.S. Department of State Office of the Historian, we have put together maps showing the World Travels of U.S. Presidents. Over the next week or two follow along and you'll see who wins the prize as the most traveled U.S. President. All of the maps will be put on our Pinterest Page for easy access and viewing.

We'll start in order with Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge and Hoover. Hang in there, after these first 6 Presidents it gets pretty interesting.

President Theodore Roosevelt was the first President or President-Elect to visit any country abroad. He traveled to Panama to inspect the construction of the Panama Canal in 1906.

President William Taft also traveled to Panama to inspect the Panama Canal in 1909 and he visited Mexico the same year.

President Woodrow Wilson visited Bermuda in 1912, France 5 times in 1918 & 1919, London in 1918, Italy in 1919, Vatican City in 1919, and Belgium in 1919.

President Warren Harding visited Panama as President-Elect in 1920, Jamaica as President-Elect in 1920, and Canada in 1923.

President Calvin Coolidge just made it to one country, Cuba in 1928.

President Herbert Hoover visited 10 Central & South American countries in November-December 1928 as the President-Elect; Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil
